The Gaang includes…
- Aang
- Appa
- Katara
- Sokka
- Momo
- Toph
- Zuko
- Suki
Team Avatar was the name used to refer to Avatar Aang and his companions during his journey to master the four elements and end the Hundred Year War, and during the Harmony Restoration Movement. It was originally composed of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Appa. Momo, Toph, Zuko, and Suki joined the group later and all became important members. The team’s constituency varied little throughout Aang’s journey across the world, until the invasion of the Fire Nation, when a much larger number of people began to join and leave the group.
Aang

Aang is the young hero of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a powerful “Avatar” who can control all four elements—air, water, earth, and fire—to maintain balance in the world. Born an Air Nomad, Aang was frozen in ice for 100 years, during which the Fire Nation began a devastating war. Despite the heavy responsibility placed on him, Aang remains playful, compassionate, and deeply opposed to violence, often seeking peaceful solutions instead of fighting. Throughout the series, he trains to master all the elements and ultimately works to end the war by confronting Fire Lord Ozai, all while growing emotionally and learning what it truly means to bring balance to the world.
Appa

Appa is the loyal flying bison and animal companion of Avatar Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender. As Aang’s lifelong friend and spirit guide, Appa is not only a mode of transportation—capable of flying using airbending—but also a deeply emotional and intelligent being who shares a powerful bond with him. Gentle, protective, and sometimes stubborn, Appa plays a crucial role in helping the group travel across the world while also providing comfort and stability to Aang, especially as the last connection to his lost Air Nomad culture.

Katara

Katara is a skilled waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe in Avatar: The Last Airbender and one of Avatar Aang’s closest allies. She is also the younger sister of Sokka, and their sibling bond plays a big role in her story. Compassionate, determined, and strong-willed, Katara often acts as the emotional core of the group, guiding others with her empathy while also standing her ground when it matters most. She begins as a self-taught waterbender but grows into a powerful master through discipline and resilience, using her abilities for both healing and combat. Throughout the journey, Katara helps Aang learn waterbending and plays a key role in opposing the Fire Nation, all while carrying the pain of losing her mother and turning it into strength.
Sokka

Sokka is a clever and resourceful warrior from the Southern Water Tribe in Avatar: The Last Airbender and the older brother of Katara. Unlike his sister, Sokka cannot bend any elements, but he makes up for it with intelligence, strategy, and creativity in battle. Initially immature and somewhat sexist, he grows significantly over time into a capable leader and tactician, playing a crucial role in guiding the group’s plans. Known for his humor and sarcasm, Sokka balances the team emotionally while proving that strength doesn’t only come from bending, but also from mindset, adaptability, and courage.

Momo

Momo is a small, playful flying lemur and loyal companion to Avatar Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Though he doesn’t speak, Momo is expressive, curious, and often brings lighthearted energy to the group with his mischievous behavior. He forms strong bonds with the team, especially Aang and Katara, and occasionally helps in small but meaningful ways during their journey. As one of the last known flying lemurs, Momo also represents a quiet connection to Aang’s lost Air Nomad culture, much like Appa.
Toph

Toph Beifong is a powerful earthbender in Avatar: The Last Airbender who becomes one of Avatar Aang’s most important teachers. Blind since birth, Toph “sees” the world by sensing vibrations through the ground, giving her a unique and incredibly precise awareness of her surroundings. Tough, independent, and unapologetically blunt, she rejects being treated as weak and proves herself as one of the strongest earthbenders alive. She is also the inventor of metalbending, a rare skill that allows her to control refined metal. Despite her rough exterior, Toph cares deeply about her friends and plays a key role in helping Aang master earthbending.

Zuko

Zuko is a conflicted firebender prince from the Fire Nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender and the son of Fire Lord Ozai. Initially introduced as an antagonist obsessed with capturing Avatar Aang to restore his honor, Zuko is driven by deep internal struggle, guilt, and a desire for approval. Over time, through guidance from his uncle Iroh, he begins to question his beliefs and the morality of the Fire Nation’s actions. His journey becomes one of redemption and self-discovery, eventually leading him to join Aang and teach him firebending, proving that true honor comes from doing what is right, not from pleasing others.
Suki

Suki is a skilled warrior and leader of the Kyoshi Warriors in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Strong, disciplined, and confident, Suki is a non-bender who relies on her training, agility, and precision in combat. She first appears as a protector of Kyoshi Island and later becomes an important ally to Avatar Aang and his friends. She also develops a close relationship with Sokka, helping him grow past his early biases and become more respectful and mature. Loyal and fearless, Suki proves that skill and discipline can stand just as strong as bending.
